Dhall Rice Powder (also known as Paruppu Podi in Tamil) is a traditional South Indian
dry chutney powder made from lentils (dhall) and spices. It's usually mixed with hot rice and ghee or sesame oil.
Here’s a simple homemade Dhall Rice Powder (Paruppu Podi) recipe:
Dry roast toor dal and chana dal in a pan on medium flame till golden and aromatic. Keep aside.
In the same pan, roast dry red chillies, black pepper, cumin seeds, garlic cloves, and curry leaves with a few drops of oil.
Add a pinch of asafoetida and turn off the flame.
Let everything cool completely.
Grind all roasted ingredients together in a mixie to a slightly coarse powder.
Add salt and pulse once more to mix well.
Store in an airtight container.
